The Process of Change—Initial Reactions

The preparation for inclusive education involved strengthening the six communities that were within the development sites, and building support from among community members. We called this process ‘a whole community approach’. Involving the whole community meant informing as many community members as possible within the research and development area about the project, and involving them in the process. An ecological inventory was created from recording the prejudices, myths and superstitions, the beliefs, and the ways of life in the community. The community’s joy, suffering, fears, anxieties, and its dominant social mores were recorded and analysed before planning the intervention and solutions.

When the nurseries turned inclusive, we recorded what the parents felt. They were not happy. I give below some of the comments as parents expressed them in Hindi, their own language; the translation follows: Parents of children with disability felt,

“Mera baccha normal bacchon ke saath kaise padhega, normal bache marenge to nahin, dhakka lagaenge to gir jaayega, chiddhaenge to nahin?” (How will my child study with normal children? Will the normal children not hit him, if they push him, he will fall, and won’t they tease him?)
